Getting Started
We occasionally have new members that have not fished before or at least not for Bass. It is likely that some people new to the sport are overwhelmed by all of the different fishing reels, poles, tackle, and techniques. I would imagine it is a lot to take in and may prevent some people that are interested to not join. The purpose of this post is to provide some information to break through all of the confusion and take the next steps to enjoying the sport of fishing with this group.
The first thing needed is a fishing reel and rod. Other than a boat, this is potentially the most expensive part of the cost of fishing. If you do not know whether you will like this sport long term, then the number of ball bearings in the reel or the action of the fishing rod may not be as important. An inexpensive spinning rod combo may do the trick for under $20. If you think you want to do this longer term, then $50-$70 is more likely the expense to purchase a better reel and rod. It is recommended 6 or more ball bearings in the spinning reel and a 6′ 6″ – 7′ medium action spinning rod be considered. As for a casting rod, let that be for another time down the road with some experience. Trying to use a casting rod when first starting out will likely result in a bad experience with lots of time spent untangling line and less time fishing.
Fishing line comes in a variety of strengths and materials. Keep it simple and start out with 6 – 10 pound clear mono. If the reel is used to put the line on, make sure to take the line off the label side of the line spool and not straight reeling off the line spool while it spins. This should help to minimize line twists.
An example of tackle for river fishing can be seen with this article. For lake fishing, crankbaits or Texas Rigged soft plastics work well.
