Saginaw Bay Walleye
Kyle Thede and I visited Saginaw Bay last week on June 22nd to fish for Walleyes. We ended up on the water at 8:15am, about an hour later than we had planned. John Urbanick and Rick Manuszak were also fishing the same day. We chose to go to the Black Hole while John and Rick went to the Spark Plug. As usual, there were fishing nets there, a much higher count than I have seen in past years. We dragged bottom bouncers with pink and purple crawler harnesses in 20-22′ of water. We picked up two Walleye mid-morning that were close to 20″ . Later in the morning, we started dragging plugs at a 10-15′ depth using downriggers. Initially, we tried various Hot N Tots with no luck. After switching to a black/silver minnow style Rapala, we picked up one additional 21″ Walleye at a 15′ depth. Also, John and Rick ended up with two Walleyes.
Other boats were mainly focusing on the Spark Plug closest to Sebewaing and were bringing back higher counts of Walleye. One boat of two limited out using a Barbie colored Reef Runner 800 series at about 1.4 mph. Several boats brought back 20+ Walleye from this location. Also, last Friday, Craig and Lisa Roach fished straight off of Linwood 20-22′ feet of water using bottom bouncers and harnesses from 8am-2pm and landed seven Walleye.
